How Much Paint Does It Take to Paint a Car?
Plan automotive paint quantity from area, coats, product coverage, transfer efficiency, waste, component ratio, and available packages.

Paint quantity is a stage-by-stage coverage calculation. The number of panels, exposed area, coats, manufacturer coverage basis, transfer efficiency, job-waste allowance, product ratio, and package sizes all matter. A vehicle-size label alone cannot resolve them.
Calculate each stage independently
Primer, color/base, and clear may have different covered areas, coat counts, coverage figures, efficiencies, ratios, and packages. Combining them into one “gallons of paint” number hides the information needed to purchase the right components.
For each stage, the calculator uses:
sprayable volume = area × coats ÷ coverage ÷ transfer efficiency × (1 + waste)
Coverage and area must describe compatible units. Transfer efficiency is a percentage from 1 through 100, not an extra waste factor.
Find the area you actually intend to cover
You can enter known area, create a generic vehicle envelope, or select panel areas. A generic envelope is useful early, but it does not identify every opening, edge, replacement panel, or excluded surface. Panel presets are planning conveniences and should be replaced with measurements when precision matters.
Read the coverage basis
A technical data sheet may describe ready-to-spray mixture or a particular neutral component. Those bases are not interchangeable. If coverage belongs to one ratio component, the covered component is expanded into the full sprayable mixture using that component’s share of the entered ratio.

Convert quantity into packages
Required sprayable volume is not necessarily the package volume you purchase. The calculator compares package options with the complete sprayable requirement for each stage. It does not optimize packages separately for component A, B, and C. Enter package sizes here only when they represent comparable complete-stage or kit-equivalent volumes. If actual components are sold separately, use the component breakdown to compare each requirement with its own available packages.
If every entered stage-level package option has a price, a cost-minimizing combination may leave more material than the smallest-leftover combination.
When any price is missing, the calculator minimizes leftover first and package count second. It reports the selection rule so a blank price cannot silently be treated as free.
Worked demonstration
Example mode uses 100 square feet, two coats, 400 square feet per sprayable gallon, 50% transfer efficiency, 10% waste, and a neutral 4:1:1 component ratio. The values are deliberately round so the calculation can be checked. They are not manufacturer guidance.
The base formula produces 1.1 sprayable gallons for that demonstration stage before package decisions. Component shares are four-sixths, one-sixth, and one-sixth of the sprayable total. Use your current product data and intended stage area for real planning.
Sanity-check the result
Read the breakdown before treating the total as a purchase quantity. Confirm that every enabled stage has the intended area percentage and coat count. Check that the coverage basis matches the number you entered. Make sure efficiency is expressed as a percentage from 1 through 100 and that waste appears once. Component volumes should add back to the sprayable stage total within rounding tolerance.
Then review package selection separately. Selected package volume should meet or exceed the required sprayable stage volume, and leftover should equal selected volume minus that requirement. A cost-minimizing package combination can leave more material than a leftover-minimizing combination, so the stated selection rule matters. Do not treat this combined stage selection as separate package rounding for each ratio component.
Finally, compare the direct-area result with an envelope or panel-area estimate when both are available. A large difference is a reason to revisit scope and measurements, not to average the two answers.

Verify the current technical data, coverage basis, coat requirement, compatible components, package sizes, and all job-specific decisions with the manufacturer or qualified professional.
