Estimating Panel Paint Cost
Compare hood, bumper, door, fender, and multi-panel refinishing estimates using explicit labor, material, blending, fee, and uncertainty inputs.

The cost to paint a hood, bumper, door, or fender is not determined by panel name alone. Condition, repair scope, adjacent-panel blending, labor assumptions, materials, fixed fees, overhead, contingency, tax, and local shop practice can all change a quote.
Name the scope before the price
“Paint a bumper” might describe refinishing a sound removed cover, work on an installed assembly, correction of prior defects, or a larger repair. The calculator is a refinishing budget builder; it does not estimate structural repair, replacement parts, calibration, hidden damage, corrosion, hazardous materials, or vehicle-specific procedures.
Use the scope field to describe what the row represents, then place any unmodeled work in a written quote rather than hiding it in a generic hour multiplier.
Build labor from visible parts
Each panel row accepts preparation, refinish, and blend values for low, central, and high scenarios. Blend time is adjacent-panel count multiplied by an editable hours-per-adjacent-panel assumption. One job-wide labor rate converts total scenario hours into labor cost.
Because each range value is entered, a reader can explain why the high scenario differs. The calculator never manufactures a high number by adding an unexplained percentage to the center.
Keep materials and business layers separate
Panel material dollars are entered per scenario. Fixed fees are job-wide. Overhead applies to direct labor, materials, and fixed fees. Contingency applies after overhead. Optional tax is calculated last.
This sequence prevents a percentage from being applied to an unclear base. It also makes quote comparison more useful: a difference might come from direct scope, business cost, or tax rather than panel count.
Worked demonstration
Example mode loads one hood row, editable demonstration hours, a $75 hourly rate, $200 central materials, a $50 fixed fee, 10% overhead, 10% contingency, and zero tax. These are arithmetic examples, not a price guide or labor standard. Low and high hours and materials are entered separately.
Check whether the range explains anything
A useful low, central, and high estimate names what changes between the scenarios. The low case might represent the clearly visible scope. The central case can include the estimator’s most supportable planning assumptions. The high case can represent specific uncertainty that a written inspection or quote still needs to resolve. The values should not be three arbitrary percentages around one total.
Review the hours and materials row by row. If the high total rises, you should be able to point to added preparation, refinishing, blending, materials, or a job-wide cost layer. This makes the estimate easier to challenge and prevents a broad contingency from concealing an omitted panel or fee.
Compare up to three quotes locally
The calculator can show the difference between its central scenario and three labeled totals. Those labels and totals remain only on the current page; they are not included in shared URLs, storage, or analytics.
Compare written scope as well as totals:
- included panels, parts, and blend boundaries;
- stated condition assumptions and change-order process;
- labor, material, fee, and tax treatment;
- exclusions and unmodeled operations;
- finish, warranty, schedule, and inspection terms.

Compare one-panel and multi-panel jobs consistently
A single panel and a multi-panel job should use the same cost categories even when their totals differ. Add one row per modeled panel, preserve quantities, and identify blending through adjacent-panel count rather than hiding it in refinish hours.
Review job-wide inputs separately from row inputs. Labor rate, fixed fees, overhead, contingency, and tax should not be duplicated on every panel. Prep, refinish, blend, and material values belong to the panel or scope they describe.
