How this calculator works
Quick mode turns an overall vehicle envelope into an editable coverage estimate. Panel-packing mode instead places individually entered rectangles on a fixed-width roll. Both modes keep net geometry, handling or layout loss, job waste, purchase quantity, and optional cost layers separate.
Choose quick mode when you need an early range and can measure overall length, width, and height. Choose panel mode when the widths, heights, quantities, and rotation rules of major pieces are known. Comparing the two results is a useful scope check; neither is a vehicle-model specification.
Pricing is optional. A material result remains available with every price blank. When pricing is entered, material cost follows the recommended purchase quantity and the selected price basis: per linear length, per area, or a whole roll. Design, labor, overhead, gross margin, and optional tax are separate inputs.
Formula and variables
For quick mode:
envelope area = length × width + 2 × length × height + 2 × width × height
net area = envelope area × scope percentage × surface factor
theoretical roll length = net area ÷ roll width
handling length = theoretical length + cut count × allowance per cut
recommended purchase length = handling length × (1 + waste percentage)
The scope percentage represents the intended portion of the generic envelope. Full exterior, upper body, roof, and hood presets populate 100%, 65%, 15%, and 10%; every value is editable. The surface factor changes a rectangular box into an explicit curved-surface planning assumption. The range varies that factor by ±0.10 within 0.50–1.20.
The handling allowance is added before waste. Waste is applied exactly once at the end.
Panel mode expands each quantity into individual rectangles and adds the entered allowance to all four edges. A rectangle must fit the roll in an allowed orientation. The deterministic shelf layout reports rectangle area, packed length, packing waste, and final job waste separately.
Optional professional pricing uses:
direct cost = material + design + labor
cost with overhead = direct cost × (1 + overhead)
selling price before tax = cost with overhead ÷ (1 − gross margin)
total = selling price before tax × (1 + tax)
Gross margin must be below 100%. It is not treated as a simple markup.
Worked example
Select Use example to load a 180 × 72 × 56 inch generic envelope, full 100% scope, 0.85 surface factor, five estimated cuts, four inches of handling per cut, a 60-inch roll, and 10% job waste.
The rectangular envelope is 41,184 square inches. Applying the 0.85 surface factor gives 35,006.4 square inches. Dividing by the 60-inch roll produces 583.44 inches of theoretical length. Five four-inch allowances add 20 inches. Applying 10% waste once to 603.44 inches gives 663.784 inches, or about 55.32 linear feet.
Changing only the surface factor by ±0.10 produces an example range of about 49.02–61.61 feet. That range is not a confidence interval; it shows the effect of one visible assumption.
Assumptions and limitations
- Overall dimensions form a rectangular envelope, not the exact surface of a vehicle.
- Scope presets and suggested cut counts are editable demonstration assumptions awaiting practitioner review.
- Curves, recesses, overlaps, seams, openings, texture, repairs, trim, direction, and installer technique are not modeled.
- Panel packing uses rectangles and a reproducible heuristic. It is not guaranteed to find the mathematical global minimum.
- Per-roll pricing rounds up to complete rolls. It does not represent availability, shipping, returns, or tax rules.
- Professional pricing is a transparent arithmetic model, not a local quote or labor standard.
Verify measurements, material dimensions, package length, direction rules, allowances, and written quote scope with the relevant supplier or qualified installer before purchasing.
Frequently asked questions
Is square footage enough to buy a vinyl roll?
No. Square footage describes area, while a roll has a fixed width. Wide panels, orientation, edge allowance, and the blank spaces in a layout can require more linear length than area alone suggests.
Why does the quick calculator ask for a cut count?
An allowance per cut cannot be calculated without an estimated number of cuts. The scope preset suggests five for full and upper-body planning and one for roof or hood, but the field remains visible and editable.
Is waste added twice in panel mode?
No. Packing waste is the unused rectangular area created by the shelf layout. Your job-waste percentage is applied once to the packed length after that layout.
Can this calculator tell me what a shop will charge?
It can organize entered material, labor, overhead, margin, and tax assumptions. It cannot determine local rates, vehicle condition, complexity, warranty responsibility, or a provider’s exact scope.
Are shared links private?
The site does not receive them, but selected inputs are readable in the URL. Review a URL before sending it. Notes are not collected, and this calculator has no notes field.
